The Washington Football team is looking to hire a full-time Director, Mental Health & Wellness. This position will utilize a proactive and holistic model focused on promoting wellness within the player community and expanding to include all members of the player ecosystem.  This role will be available for player consultations, facilitation of mental health trainings, and providing resources, tools, and techniques to enhance overall player wellness on and off the field.
  • Development and facilitation of Mental Skills Training curriculum to help players improve overall wellness and improve performance.
  • Provide players with psychological counseling related to their overall mental wellness on and off the field.
  • Facilitate series of mental health and wellness presentations to the incoming Rookie class.
  • Advise and treat players with mental health conditions.
  • Develop strategies that enable players to cope with and overcome setbacks or injuries.
  • Lead the mental health and wellness team to discuss ongoing mental health education initiatives and identify potential issues or concerns.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of all mental health records related to any players, including any details of any services or treatment provided to players.
  • Tailor strategies that assist athletes in overcoming difficulties, improving performance and preparing for competition.
  • Conduct research on players mental, emotional and physical attributes in order to effectively counsel and improve performance levels.
  • Identify mental strengths and weaknesses that contribute to or affect a players performance.
  • Submission of annual certification requirements with NFL and NFLPA
  • Facilitate mental health and wellness training sessions for front office employees.
  • Candidates must be: 
    • Board Certified Psychiatrist 
    • Doctoral level clinical or counseling psychologist; or 
    • Professional Counselor with a master’s degree in counseling or social work.
  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant clinical experience working with a multicultural population.
  • Have a valid license to practice as required under applicable law, that has never been denied, suspended, revoked, terminated, voluntarily relinquished under threat of disciplinary action or restricted in any way.
  • Ability to effectively work with a diverse, multicultural player and staff population, with an awareness and understanding of the culture of football at an elite level.
  • Collaborative. Effectively able to work with a multidisciplinary team including Player Engagement, Athletic Training, Nutritionists, and coaches.
  • Thorough understanding of sports culture and the ability to display sound judgment.
  • Ability to communicate and interact closely with athletes, coaching staff and administrative personnel.
  • Excellent presentation and facilitation skills
  • Experience with and demonstrated ability to plan and execute informative presentations in large group or webinar settings.
  • Innovative thinker with strong conceptual and problem-solving skills.
  • Extraordinary counseling skills.
  • Passionate about enhancing the self-efficacy of athletes.
  • Incredible listening skills with expertise in using breathing, relaxation and/or cognitive techniques to instill focus and mental intensity that is necessary for athletes to increase their performance levels.
