Summary:

The Chicago Blackhawks are seeking a Director, Hockey Systems to lead a team tasked with full stack software design, development, deployment and maintenance of custom applications and technologies used to support the hockey operations department. This individual will work closely with the entire hockey operations team to understand requirements and own the creation and optimization of internal products and solutions to provide data and interfaces that support critical decision-making.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Work directly with stakeholders throughout hockey operations to assess needs and to create tools and documentation that streamlines processes and solves for data needs
  • Oversee the design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance of databases, web services, GUIs, and other aspects of web applications to provide data that drives decision-making for hockey operations, with strategic vision for a coordinated suite of products and technology use
  • Build responsive, multi-platform applications using clear, readable, efficient code
  • Generate digestible reports and analyses answering critical front office, coaching, and scouting questions
  • Optimize and improve existing systems through ongoing enhancement
  • Create automated unit and integration testing and documentation for all development
  • Support the continuous development of data warehouses, managing the ingestion and cleansing of data utilized by internal software, research, and reporting systems
  • Provide support and assistance to end-users and respond to technical issues in a timely manner
  • Contribute innovative hockey thought and workflow optimization of the department and organization
  • Remain up to date on software, hardware, and emerging technologies that could apply to Hockey Operations
  • Recruit and manage a team of software engineers, data engineers, and technology support staff
  • Work with hockey leadership to prioritize projects and manage workload for engineering and technology group
  • Administration of the engineering group, including budgeting and growth planning

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field, or comparable professional experience
  • 5+ Years of full stack development experience
  • Experience managing a team of software and data engineers
  • Experience in process and best-practices for software and data engineering groups
  • Experience using web technologies including HTML, CSS, SASS/SCSS, JavaScript, jQuery, PHP, or similar tools
  • Familiarity with API design patterns to develop, report from, and integrate systems
  • Experience with cloud technologies from AWS, Azure, or GCP
  • Experience with source control tools such as Git
  • Experience with creating ETL data integration processes
  • Ability to manage priorities and coordinate tasks to solve day-to-day challenges in a dynamic environment
  • Ability to leverage a technical mindset with a creative and analytical approach to problem-solving
  • High degree of professionalism and ability to be trusted with confidential information
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, interpersonal, organizational and project management skills
  • Demonstrated passion for hockey and familiarity with rules and terminology is preferred
