Under the supervisor of Gossett Student-Athlete Center's Athletic Academic Counselors, the Assistant Athletic Academic Counselors will be responsible for providing academic support to a caseload of student-athletes while monitoring continuing eligibility and ensuring progress towards graduation.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
- Responsible for overseeing and managing Study hall for participating student-athletes from assigned sport programs including day time and night time operations
- Advise & assist a caseload of student-athletes with course selection to meet career goals and athletic demands
- Monitor academic progress of a caseload of student-athletes in accordance to institutional, Big Ten, and NCAA eligibility regulations
- Hold weekly academic sessions with designated caseload of at-risk students to help develop academic skills including time management, organization, use of all resources, etc.
- Complete session reports in addition to assisting AAC with weekly academic report to coaches
- Communicate regularly with assigned Athletic Academic Counselor & Learning Specialist specific to the academic performance of assigned at-risk student-athletes
- Assist with summer bridge, recruiting , GSAC/3ACE conference and other various projects as assigned
- Maintain academic integrity at ALL times while adhering to all GSAC, University of Maryland, B1G, and NCAA rules and regulations
- Participate in regularly scheduled training specific to role of AAC/ALS in order to enhance and develop the necessary skill sets to best prepare for a full-time career
Other Essential Functions:
- Must have strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail (specifically google suite, microsoft office & various university systems)
- Ability to set appropriate professional boundaries and serve as a professional supervisor, monitor and leader of a diverse student-athlete population during study hall and meetings/trainings
- Maintain a high level of cultural awareness and competency
- Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, including early mornings, evenings and some weekends
- Maintain academic integrity at all times
- Ability to communicate effectively, professionally and accurately (oral and written)
Qualifications:
- Master's degree required; preferred educational background in Student Personnel, Social Work, Counseling, Education or Sport Administration.
- Preference is also given to applicants who have completed a Graduate Assistantship in athletic academic services and/or have N4A membership.
- Must have a desire to obtain full-time employment in the Athletic Academic Services profession.
- Experience working with at-risk student populations within an academic setting
- Ability to work independently in a fast paced environment
