The Basketball Data Developer will be involved in building and maintaining the basketball data infrastructure for Pacers Basketball, LLC (PBLLC). This position will play an integral role in shaping the overall data management strategy by working with the Front Office, Basketball Analytics Department, Sport Performance, IT, and external vendors in building out a modern data warehouse solution. This role will report to the Senior Director of Basketball Analytics and will be responsible for the acquisition, storage, transformation, and extraction of basketball data in support of Basketball Operations and basketball decision-making. 

The Basketball Data Developer will serve multiple functions including developing and managing basketball data infrastructure, querying data on behalf of users, extracting data from 3rd party vendors, implementing data governance and security policies, handling data cleanliness, and creating standards to ensure data integrity.

The Basketball Data Developer will develop extensive knowledge of PBLLC’s data and the ways in which data is stored and shared between systems. Experience working with sports data, XY tracking, and performance data is a plus. 

  • Create, maintain, and optimize data ETL pipelines to support operations, software, and analysts.
  • Identify, design, and implement internal process improvements to automate manual processes and optimize data delivery for reporting and analysis.
  • Work to develop strategies for warehouse implementation, data acquisition, matching, archiving, and recovery. Recommend best practices related to data management, cloud-based data storage, and data security.
  • Work with IT to assist in the design and implementation of security policies to protect systems and data from access by unauthorized users. Establish, maintain, and document policies and procedures for data access, security, backup, analysis, and reporting data. 

  • Bachelor’s degree in information science, engineering, computer science, or related field.
  • Experience in a data engineering, data warehousing, or database administrator role.
  • Experience with integrating multiple data sources and managing large data structures (data warehouse, data lake) in cloud architectures (Azure, AWS, Google Cloud)
  • Advanced SQL knowledge and experience working with relational and non-relational databases.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.

Employee should have a knowledge/experience with data engineering via Azure or another cloud architecture. Experience with Azure Data Factory, Databricks, Python, R, SQL, Java and the ability to a learn and use new computer programs quickly and efficiently is preferred.

Bachelor’s degree in information science, engineering, computer science or related field. Graduate degree is a plus.

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to scope projects, interpret directions, and create technical diagrams.
Employee must be a high-level problem solver and issue identifier while dealing with various internal and external constituents to solve problems and deliver projects on time with accuracy and professionalism.

While performing the duties of this job, the noise level in the office work environment is usually moderate and the noise level in the Fieldhouse/game environment is usually loud. The stress level may become high during certain times of the year.
