Job Description: General Manager Madison Mallards
Reports to: Vern Stenman, President and Conor Caloia, COO

The Madison Mallards are the national leaders in summer collegiate baseball. Typically drawing over 6,000 fans per night, the Mallards focus on providing a fun customer experience is unparalleled. The Mallards are looking for only their 4th GM in their 21-year history with the team’s first 2 GMs still working with Mallards management group Big Top Sports + Entertainment (BTSE). 2022 is projected to be the most successful summer in the history of the team with outstanding outside ticket sales staff, culinary staff, merchandise staff, financial staff and more already in place. The successful applicant will lead the corporate advertising efforts for the team with a focus on fun, help to assemble a new inside ticket sales team, lead marketing with new staff, train great customer service throughout the company and bring a willingness to lead, while actively marketing the team and telling the story of the brand to local, regional and national outlets. 

  • Preferred candidate should have 2+ years of experience at a similar level of sports management or advertising sales. 
  • Experience managing the day-to-day operations of an organization including developing and executing policies and strategies to support organizational goals.
  • Demonstrable ability to hire, develop, lead and maintain a high-level FT staff for multiple years.
  • Success in advertising sales or related sales experience.
  • Positive attitude.
  • Strong demonstrable background as a community leader
  • History of taking ownership and leading teams.
  • Creative problem-solving ability.
  • Demonstrable background in successfully using social media, email and other digital assets to sell a product.
  • Proficiency in common industry software (MS Office suite, CRM, ticket system and accounting platforms.)
  • Strong written communication abilities (provide samples).

Sales Responsibilities
This position is responsible for selling partnerships to the local business community for the Madison Mallards that create value for both the client and for the Mallards. The position will oversee all advertising business for the team, with a focus on delivering beyond expectations for existing clients, leading new business development for the team and establishing and hitting goals on an annual basis. The GM will also oversee ticket sales for the team.

Management Responsibilities
The Mallards already have a veteran staff in place in many parts of the business including outside ticket sales, culinary, merchandise and finance. The GM will be responsible for leading this group of talented individuals while focusing on the development of strong marketing, inside sales and support teams. The GM will be responsible for developing annual budgets along with BTSE President, COO & Director of Finance. The GM will be responsible for financial decisions that support operational and budget goals.

Community Expectations: 
The GM will be expected to be an active part of the Madison community and will be active in local chambers, business networking groups and charitable pursuits. Provide examples.

  • To work most Mallards games. One benefit of the BTSE structure is that we have multiple employees capable of running games, which can provide more flexibility than most senior level executive jobs in minor league sports.
  • Initially, there may be call volume or new business development prospecting requirements of the position.
  • Schedule a minimum of 2 appointments each day with an expectation of 10 sales or business development appointments per week. 
  • Accurately record your call history in the CRM system. 
  • Use CRM to manage all leads. 
  • Regularly attend networking events. 
  • Foster a workplace culture representative of organization’s mission statement and core values.
  • Participate in team sales training and sales development sessions. 
  • Attend any team functions you are invited to. 
  • Negotiate and execute contracts on behalf of the organization.
  • Review and approve business expenses and invoices. 
  • Work with Director of Finance to manage A/P and A/R cycles and to meet Northwoods League and internal reporting deadlines.
  • Track financial performance in relation to budget and make timely, appropriate adjustments as needed to stay on path for financial goals. 
  • Develop tracking mechanisms for YTD sales performance across the business and submit weekly to President and COO.
  • Other duties as described by the President or COO.

Compensation & Benefits:
  • Pay will be commensurate with experience and qualifications of top level sports executives in the country. Bonus structure based on measurable performance goals.
