Supervisors: Mental Skills Coordinator & Director of Player Development
Classification: Full-Time
The Houston Astros are currently seeking a Mental Skills & Development Coach in the Mental Skills & Player Development Departments. Serving as a uniformed coach for a full-season affiliate or short-season-A club, the Mental Skills & Development Coach will aid in the implementation of mental skills and player development initiatives while assisting the staff with on-field practice and game duties.
Essential Duties / Responsibilities:
  • Support the Mental Skills Coordinator in developing, implementing, and evaluating all aspects of the Mental Skills Program at a Houston Astros Minor League affiliate.
  • Be the primary Mental Skills Coach for the players, coaches, and Sports Medicine and Performance staff at a Houston Astros Minor League affiliate.
  • Support the work being done by the Supervisor of Education, Player Acculturation and Language Development (e.g., learning English, life skills, communications skills, etc.) at a Houston Astros Minor League affiliate.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and evaluation of personalized Mental Training Plans for Houston Astros players at a Minor League affiliate.
  • Work with Houston Astros coaches and front office staff on a variety of Player Development and Mental Skills department initiatives.
  • Assist with the evaluation and coaching of fundamentals.
  • Assist the field staff with practice and game duties such as throwing batting practice, hitting fungoes, and coaching first base.
  • Assist the staff and players with the implementation of systems and technologies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements / Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree in psychology (or related field) is required.
  • Experience conducting mental skills workshops and training sessions with teams and individuals is required.
  • Graduate degree in Sport Psychology (or related field) from a recognized institution is preferred.
  • Baseball playing and or coaching experience at the professional, international, or collegiate level; passion for baseball is required is preferred.
  • AASP Certified Mental Performance Consultant is preferred; If not currently certified, it is required that the applicant be working towards AASP/CMPC Certification.
  • Strong willingness to work with individuals from a variety of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, and ability to thrive under pressure, and motivated to grown and learn in a competitive environment
  • Excellent written, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Experience working with elite athletes or performers (e.g., Professional, Olympic-level, Military, Collegiate, etc.) is preferred.
  • Applicant must adhere to the American Psychological Association and the Association of Applied Sport Psychology ethics codes.
  • Interest and understanding of player development and baseball analytics.
  • Ability to understand and advocate for changes due to new information and or tools in baseball.
  • Strong computer skills and proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Fluency in Spanish is a plus.
  • Strength & Conditioning education and experience is a plus.
  • Technical degree is a plus.
  • SQL and R coding skills are pluses.
Work Environment
This job operates both outside in a baseball field and office setting. This role will involve being in the heat and on the individual’s feet for long periods of time. At times the noise could become excessive.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This role routinely will be in an inside or outside type of environment for long periods of time, of which includes bending, throwing, and swinging a bat.  This role will require the individual to be physically moving for long periods of time. This role will require the individual to lift and carry up to 25 pounds throughout the day. The individual must be able to visual acuity to distinguish pitches and facilitate instruction.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
Ability to work a flexible schedule, including; extended hours, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Often travel to our minor league affiliates and other locations as required, to include, but not limited Round Rock, TX; Corpus Christi, TX; Fayetteville, NC; Quad Cities, IA; West Palm Beach, FL; and Troy, NY.
