The Dominican Republic ESL Seasonal Associate would be primarily focused on developing and delivering a baseball and life skills-related ESL curriculum for the Dominican Summer League (DSL) and other training camps at the Detroit Tigers' Dominican Academy. The DR Associate would also assist the Coordinator of Family and Community Player Programs with special events and player outings, and when necessary, with interpreting and translating on the field, in the cages, and in player meetings.  The primary objectives of this position would be to provide full-time English language and life skills instruction through the content of baseball, and to build and foster relationships with the organization's international players, serving as a resource for them on and off the field. The position would start February 1, 2022 and run until approximately December 14, 2022.
  • Utilize the Detroit Tigers' baseball and life skills centered English-language curriculum to teach the DSL players
  • Maintain the classroom in good condition; monitor and take responsibility for classroom, lab,  and library supplies; track inventory, checking out books and computers to players and making sure they are returned in a timely fashion
  • Monitor the players in the Rec Halls and teach them about proper etiquette, unspoken rules and the cultural aspects of using a shared recreation space
  • Instill in players a sense of pride in their surroundings, thereby inspiring them to maintain a clean and ordered living space
  • Assist with cultural assimilation outings to various locations, such as museums, historical and other locations 
  • Implement additional initiatives, such as English classes for coaches and staff
  • Create, post and/or distribute player information, class schedules and other pertinent information; maintain constant communication with players via email or WhatsApp
  • Serve as a English conversation partner and one-on-one tutor for players who may need extra help with their studies
  • Attend and/or manage MLB training sessions when necessary
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Bilingual Spanish
  • Previous classroom teaching experience preferred
  • ESL endorsement or certification preferred
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in Spanish and English
  • Significant understanding or working knowledge of baseball
  • Computer skills
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Able to work odd hours
  • Driver’s License and clean driving record
  • Must have passport and be able to travel out of the country

  • Classroom and baseball academy environment
  •  Will live at the Detroit Tigers Academy in San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic
  • Some evening, weekend, and holiday hours will be required
