Overview
The Public Safety Assistant will report to Public Safety Manager with responsibilities of but not limited to, safeguarding all properties of the McCormick Convention Center, access control, responding to emergencies, while providing a safe and secure environment for employees and patrons. The Public Safety Assistant will also collaborate with the Public Safety Manager on recruitment and hiring of event security staff.
Responsibilities

Provide assistance for all services and activities involved in facility and event security.

Assist in general duties of public safety, theft deterrence, and loss prevention.

Assist Public Safety Manager in issuing keys to employees and clients.

Recruiting and hiring of event staff.
-
Provide first aid in emergencies and monitor the condition of ill workers and patrons until medical help arrives.

Coordinate ordering of Police, Fire, and EMT / paramedic services as required for events.

Attending weekly production and bi-weekly management meetings and other meetings related to public safety and event security.

Coordinate and schedule training of all staff as needed in emergency preparedness, building evacuation, and emergency communications.

Maintain access control system, issue ID badges, and update records and logs.

Review officers guard tours and generate appropriate reports.

Assist Event Managers with event security as needed.

Assist Operations Department as needed.

Interact with emergency services Police, Fire, and EMT to maintain continuity of services during Public Safety Managers absence.

Maintain equipment used by Public Safety to insure good working order.

Be a member of the Safety Committee.

Other tasks as assigned.
Qualifications
-
Minimum of three (1-3) years of security experience in public assembly facility security, law enforcement, medical emergency, fire or public safety areas.

Possess demonstrable experience with the characteristics, services, and activities of public facility security and safety programs.

Have strong interpersonal skills.
-
Background and/or training in law and security is an asset.

Knowledge of supervisory principles with an emphasis on working with and training “casual” staff.

Ability to work flexible and extended hours including shift work, weekends, holidays.

While performing duties of this job, the employee is continuously asked to multi-task under time limits. Position requires constant attention to precise details and accuracy of specified standards including: following simple to complex (more than 3 steps) instructions, and concentration which frequently extends beyond 30 minutes at a time. Employees in this role will be in leadership role during emergency situations and building evacuations; this requires directing others either verbally on emergency procedures. This position also requires frequent use of interpersonal skills including: ability to direct and inform staff. Employee must be able to recognize and resolve conflicts and be able to openly communicate verbally and in writing with internal and external clients.
Physical demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally operate a computer and other office devices such as copy machines, faxes and printers. Employee will constantly move about inside and outside various areas of the facility before/during /after events in process of inspecting and securing areas of the building. Employee must frequently communicate via telephone, radio, email and in-person with others and exchange accurate information. Employee will frequently be required due to business demands and event operations to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Work environment:

The duties of this position are performed primarily indoors and occasionally outdoors in all types of weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal to moderate during non-event days and moderate to loud during event days.
