Position Summary:
The Facilities Division of OVG360 has an exciting opening for a Chief Engineer on the campus of Arizona State University for the new 5,000 seat multi-purpose arena and community ice rink. The new arena is scheduled to open in fall 2022 and will be home to ASU Sun Devil Men’s Ice Hockey, ASU Wrestling and Women’s Gymnastics programs, an NHL franchise, as well as variety of events, including concerts,  family shows, comedy and other live events. The new community ice rink will serve as a public venue to the community and will host hockey and skating programming, youth competitions, educational opportunities and more. 

The position reports directly to the Executive Director of Operations, and will oversee, manage, and maintain the facility systems. This dynamic leader will lead a team who maintains and repair electrical, plumbing, ventilation, refrigeration, and other building systems within the facility. The Chief Engineer will perform systems evaluations on facilities and determine what installation or repair services need to be performed, manage a budget, and create calculations to ensure operational efficiencies. The Chief Engineer will also be responsible for hiring and training of workers and arrange their schedules and work activities, will also develop preventative maintenance systems for mechanical and electrical equipment. This position will interact with guests at times and requires the ability to communicate and engage with the public with a focus on delivering a world class guest experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:   
  • Oversee overall daily operation and maintenance of the facility and all systems. This includes HVAC/BMS, sound, lighting, fire protection, life safety, CMMS, workplace safety, communications, scoreboard, ice making, etc.
  • Develop and establish preventative maintenance systems for mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Assign and schedule work tasks with facility engineers in a team-oriented environment and perform initial evaluations of building systems and distribute work assignments.
  • Evaluate team members’ individual performances to ensure quality operations and investigate all accidents caused by team members and prepare relevant reports.
  • Work with other operational departments to evaluate needs for all work requests—both scheduled and unscheduled—as well as any special projects that arise.
  • Coordinate and follow up on preventative maintenance on refrigeration units, plumbing, electrical, overhead doors, and any other mechanical systems.
  • Coordinate and assist in repairs involving basic electrical, mechanical, plumbing systems, sports event equipment and other equipment needed to produce events.
  • Read blueprints and plan projects to complete assigned tasks, and coordinate and follow up on incidental carpentry, masonry, and painting and plaster work.
  • Review and maintain maintenance logs and maintenance budgets and complete all documentation necessary to the completion of a task.
  • Instruct team in how to dispose of hazardous materials in accordance with established OSHA procedures.
  • Oversee the set-up of events; coordinate facility arrangements with concessionaires and vendors; direct and monitor the work of contractors, engineers, and architects on building projects.
  • Maintain hazardous materials communication program, material safety data sheets and required records and permits; maintain knowledge of changes in pertinent Federal, State and Local regulations.
  • Develops, evaluates, and recommends facility practices and procedures that reflect the goals and objectives of internal and external clients and/or to improve the efficiency and safety of operations, in compliance with the organization.
  • Review contracts for compliance with event and/or government specifications and suitability for occupancy.
  • Assist in the preparation and negotiation of service agreements for facility systems as needed. 
  • Negotiates and administers labor group contracts (third party service vendors, etc.)
  • Attend department head meetings and staff meetings. Develop and maintaining harmonious working relationship with all departments.
  • Investigate, analyze, and resolve operational problems and complaints. Conduct periodic staff meetings to discuss procedures, challenges, and policy changes.
  • Assist in the preparation of the annual operating budget and recommend an annual capital budget for long-range repairs and improvements. Authorize the requisition of equipment and supplies within budget guidelines.
  • Manage subordinate supervisors who oversee employees in various functions of physical plant and event planning and execution (carpenters, electricians, plumbers, etc.) 
  • Know and ensure all laws, codes, ordinances, policies, procedures, risk management, safety precautions, rules/regulations and emergency procedures are followed. Develop program to train all employees on fire/life safety and emergency procedures.
  • Assist in developing and implement emergency procedures, and safety and risk management policies.
  • Responsible for Health & Safety compliance
  • Make immediate decisions and communicate with all users of the facility in an emergency
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Work extended and/or irregular hours including nights, weekends and holidays as needed.

Requirements
  •   Experience in project management and building engineering
  • 7+ years of experience in the field, Sports/Entertainment/Hospitality venues preferred 
  • HS diploma or equivalent (Bachelor’s/Technical degree from an accredited college/university/school preferred)
  • Possession of a journeyman electrician’s license strongly recommended
  • Advanced skills with AutoCAD and Visio, and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Access, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, Explorer)
  • Strong analytical skills and proven organizational ability and attention to detail required
  • Must be a self-starter, proactive, flexible, and deadline-focused
  • Must show demonstrated knowledge of physical plant management, supervisory skills and experience in work crew supervision in facility operations.
  • Forklift certified or ability to be certified
  • Ability to work event nights, weekends and holidays as required.
  • Knowledge of budget preparation and control.
  • Knowledge of OSHA requirements.
  • Knowledge of boilers, chillers, refrigeration 
  • Knowledge of Fire Alarm / Fire Protection systems
  • Knowledge of Security / Hold up Alarm systems  
Nonessential Job Functions:  
· Other duties and responsibilities as assigned
· Experience in an arena, stadium, convention center or other multi-purpose public assembly facility preferred
· Supervisory experience preferred 
· Bachelor’s degree or equivalent industry experience
· Possession of, or ability to obtain a valid CPR certificate
  
Skills:  
Proficient knowledge of Windows and Microsoft Office software
Operate standard office equipment including printer, copier, computer and fax machine.
Written/Oral communications - ability to speak and write clearly and concisely, get messages across that have the desired effect
  
Working Conditions:  
  • Minimal Travel (<10% of work time) may be required to travel. Trips may require air travel and/or overnight stay away from home for one or more nights.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule inclusive of weekends, nights and holidays required.
  • Frequent bending, lifting up to 50 pounds, sitting, standing, exposure to multiple external elements, extensive walking through the building including inclines and stairs.
