The Philadelphia Flyers Hockey Analytics department supports decision making & strategy across all facets of the Hockey Operations department. The Analytics Engineer will be responsible for collaboratively planning, developing, and maintaining the databases, ETL processes, and internal tooling that underpins the work done by colleagues within the Flyers Hockey Analytics department. This role will also present the opportunity analyze data and share new insights with other members of the Analytics department, as well as the broader Hockey Operations department. This position will report to the Director of Hockey Analytics.

Responsibilities
  • Collaboratively design, build, and maintain the core database infrastructure used by the Flyers Hockey Analytics department
  • Design, build, and maintain ETL pipelines that enforce data standardization and integrity across a broad spectrum of upstream data sources
  • Build and maintain internal R & Python packages used by all members of the Flyers Hockey Analytics department using best software development practices
  • Collaborate with Data Scientists on training & deploying predictive models into production
  • Automate & optimize query performance across the suite of reports developed by the Flyers Hockey Analytics department
  • Configure and manage resources in a cloud computing environment, and maintain technical ownership over the infrastructure and deployed code
  • Identify data needs for stakeholders across the Hockey Operations department, understand their specific needs, and build solutions to enable data-driven decisions







Preferred Skills & Qualifications
The following skills will be given priority when selecting the ideal candidate
  • Bachelor’s degree or graduate degree in a technical field (Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, or equivalent)
  • Experience with R & Python programming languages
  • Experience with SQL and relational database development (Microsoft SQL Server preferred)
  • Experience managing and working in a cloud computing environment (Azure, AWS, or GCP)
  • Experience collaborating on software projects using version control (Git & GitHub)
  • Experience with data pipeline orchestration tools (Prefect, Airflow, or equivalent)
  • Experience with distributed computing and big data storage and processing (Databricks, Apache Spark, or equivalent)
  • Ability to plan and execute projects independently while maintaining a high standard of work
  • Exceptional communication skills and ability to translate technical concepts into easy-to-understand language for non-technical stakeholders
  • Ability to work some nights and weekends when required
  • Understanding of hockey and statistical analysis in the context of sports
