SUMMARY
The Shift Engineer is an event-based position. This role primarily works second shift and weekends as needed to provide coverage for the variety of events that take place in Gainbridge Fieldhouse & Bicentennial Unity Plaza. This position assists the other members of the building maintenance team with the maintenance of all electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems or equipment on the PS&E Campus, which includes Gainbridge Fieldhouse, Bicentennial Unity Plaza, and The Ascension St. Vincent Center. The Shift Engineer also assists with the operation of the central plant in the absence of other department personnel and/or during events.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Monitor and circulate around the PS&E Campus during events to ensure the buildings are operating as anticipated. This could include setting or making temperature changes due to size and type of event crowds; turning on/off elevators and escalators, ensuring all lights are on, making necessary repairs and adjustments to equipment, arena seats, doors, restrooms, concession stands and other apparatus during events.
  • Assist in preventive maintenance of equipment throughout the campus buildings.
  • Assist with central plant operations as assigned. This could include making necessary adjustments to start up and operate central plant, monitoring various gauges and meters to ensure safe and efficient operation of central plant equipment, logging readings as required, start/stop chillers and pumps to maintain proper water temperature to air handling units.
  • Ability to learn and operate the building management system and the Lutron lighting system.
  • Change lights and ballast.
  • Change filters, grease motors, and replace belts on HVAC equipment.
  • Repair plumbing fixtures as needed.
  • Auger drains.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance and repairs on restaurant equipment.
  • Repair and replace seats as needed.
  • Remove snow around building.
  • Conduct regular inspections of Central Plant areas to maintain organization and cleanliness.
  • Circulate through PS&E campus to monitor condition of restrooms, plumbing, escalators, elevators and lights and resolve any problems.
  • Assist in performing miscellaneous maintenance related tasks as assigned.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Two years minimum of maintenance technician experience required
Commercial facility and/or arena and stadium experience preferred

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret plans, instructions and reports. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers, and the public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Basic math skills are required, including the ability to use and read rulers and other measuring devices, interpret technical diagrams and reports and read architectural and engineering plans.

REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret directions.

PROBLEM SOLVING REQUIREMENTS
Employee must exercise independent judgement in determining when to start air conditioning, evaluating Fieldhouse comfort level and adjusting control temperature, maintaining proper ice temperature for ice events and deciding how to resolve various plumbing, electrical and mechanical problems that arise during events. If working during events, the employee normally is not directly supervised, but will coordinate with the other engineer(s) on duty and report major issues/incidents to the engineering supervisor and / or event supervisor.

Basic computer skills are required and at a minimum the employee should be familiar with the MS Office suite of products - especially Word, Excel and Outlook.
