Ask Buffy

Dear Buffy,

I just graduated from a New York State University with my Masters in Sports Management but I live in Atlanta. I have been trying to get a start in the sports industry but it has been somewhat unrewarding thus far. I am interested in a couple of positions that the Houston Texans. Can you please advise me and give me some insight as to how I should go about trying to get my foot in the door. Are they hiring more people locally? How do I tell them that I do not expect them to pay my relocation? Thanks in advance for your time.

Sincerely,

Wanting to be a Texan

Dear Wanting to be a Texan,

It's hard on a cover letter to convince people that a non-local person could easily adjust to and fit into a different market. That's where on your resume if you have worked or spent time in a market of your choice it is good to use the city name, if possible.

Another way I suggest candidates "look local" is to have a local address. Some people suggest setting up a local P.O. Box. Others say that if you have cousins or grandparents in a market, use their address.

Teams and many companies don't like to hire outside the region, so they look at the applicant's address. Be ready, though, if they call you in for an interview that you can be there in a moment's time.
