Ask Buffy

Dear Buffy,

I'm a hard-working, sports enthusiast trying to break into the sports marketing field. Any clever ideas on how to get noticed in an overcrowded market? I'm willing to do anything to get started. Thought you might have some insight I could use.

Sincerely,

Getting Started

Dear Getting Started,

The latest news reports state it is hard for new graduates to get a job this summer. But there are plenty of entry-level positions available at professional sports teams, particularly in ticket sales, either part-time or full-time. How do you get noticed? Not by enclosing your resume in sneakers or shoes - "to get your foot in the door". The best way to get noticed is by learning to and being willing to sell. Generating revenue is critical in our entrepreneurial world. He who generates the most revenue gets noticed. Or, be the absolute best at whatever you do - client servicing, public relations, game operations. To paraphrase a famous speech, "Ask not what the sports industry can do for you, but what you can do for the industry." Take pride in yourself and your work!
